It’s January 2020 y’all! The start of a brand new year AND a brand new decade! If you have been looking for a reason to “start fresh” there truly is no better time than now. We’re at the tail end of the month so the excitement of the New Year may be sizzling out by now, but don’t let that stop you from staying on track with your goals.
Starting the year with a clean slate can be so rejuvenating and satisfying. Take advantage of this opportunity to clean up, declutter, re-prioritize, re-arrange and purge your life. Here are a few things, big and small, that you can do to start the year of feeling fresh and rejuvenated!
Clean Up, De-clutter, & Organize
Let’s be honest, we all have those little household projects and/or chores we tend to put off longer than we should because they’re so dreadful and tedious; things like organizing that “junk drawer” (in my case junk closet!) or folding that huge pile of laundry to name a couple. Let this New Year be your motivation to knock those things out! Make a list of things you’d like to have completed around the house by the end of the month and DO IT!
Organize your closet or drawers, change those air filters, clean out your car, get all the Tupperware containers under control; whatever it is that needs to be done, write it down and get it done. Whether it takes you a few hours or a few days, find a little bit of time each day to work towards completing that list. The sense of accomplishment and relief you’ll feel once it’s done will be totally worth it.
If you need extra motivation, pick something special to treat yourself with once you’ve checked everything off your list like a mani/pedi or some retail therapy. If these bigger projects still seem a little too daunting, consider deleting old or unwanted photos from your phone, get rid of unused apps on your phone, or clean out your “friends list” on Facebook or Instagram. Even these small gestures can leave you feeling a little lighter as you start off the New Year.
Re-prioritize & Get structured
The beginning of a New Year is also a great time to think about what is important to you, and how you are going to keep that at the forefront of your mind in the year to come. Set new goals, re-prioritize things in your life that may not be working for you, or simply add some structure to help you achieve your current goals. Throughout the year it often gets difficult to juggle or manage everything life throws at us in addition to trying to accomplish our goals.
Take this opportunity to buy a planner or calendar, make a vision board, start meal planning, get a gym membership, or do whatever you need to get you back on track to achieving your goals. Make it a point to schedule that girls day you’ve been meaning to plan, or just take a few moments to put yourself first by giving yourself some much needed “me time”. All of these things can have a huge impact on your mood, productivity and ultimately your success. Put a plan in place for the year now and execute it! Setting quarterly or bi-annual benchmarks for yourself as reminders can help keep you accountable through the remainder of the year.
Re-arrange & Decorate
I don’t know about you, but there is something about re-arranging or switching up the furniture and décor in my house that I just love! It makes things feel new, different and fresh! Little things like changing up or swapping the photos in your frames for updated pictures or moving the furniture in your bedroom around are easy and inexpensive options.
If you have room in your budget or don’t mind splurging a little, a quick trip to your local Home store is a must! A few of my favorite places for great deals on housewares are HomeGoods, At Home, and Hobby Lobby (pssst… home decor is currently 50% off at Hobby Lobby this week!). They all offer a wide variety of décor and home furnishings at really affordable prices. Try changing up your wall art, getting a new rug, adding a centerpiece to your table, or even updating a lamp or light fixture to make a statement. A combination of any of those options will also make a huge difference and give your place a whole new look and feel.
The last and maybe most impactful way to start the year off fresh is to purge! Get rid of, throw out, and donate all those unused things that have accumulated over the year(s). Go through your closet, purge your kitchen cabinets of those old dishes or pots and pans, or clean out your garage. You’ll be surprised at how many things you’ve forgotten you have just sitting around taking up space. Many of those things can be put to good use by someone else.
If you have children, the beginning of the year is also a great time to go through all their clothing and toys. Kids grow so fast and can easily go through several different shoe and/or clothing sizes in the span of a year. Take some time to sort everything into three categories: keep, donate, toss. If you don’t know anyone who can personally use the donation items, call a local church or charity. If you’d rather sell the items to make a few extra bucks, Facebook Marketplace, garage sales and Children’s Resale Clothing boutiques are good options as well.
If you’re wanting to start this New Year and decade feeling refreshed, accomplished, and motivated I encourage you to try one of more of these tips! Set the tone for the year to come and start the decade on the right foot. This is YOUR year… this is YOUR decade!
