Do you feel sluggish, negative, stuck or downright depressed? I believe in stagnant energy, and if you are feeling this way it may be due to stagnant energy. This can be at home or at your workplace, home office or any other physical space. Stagnant energy can affect you mentally, physically, spiritually and energetically. Negative energy can affect your happiness and can manifest into your success; something I think we can agree we do NOT want in our lives. If you ever find yourself in a “funk”, consider the benefits of burning sage. I have been burning sage aka “smudging” for two years now and it has been a game changer for me.
For those of you who are reading this and are saying to yourself, “what in the world is she talking about?” Let me first explain to you briefly what sage is. Sage is an aromatic plant, which means it is used for its aroma and many are used for their medicinal purposes. It has been well established in the Native American culture and is used for a whole list of benefits, but most commonly used as a method of purification/cleansing. Although this ritual is not used by all groups, there are many cultures around the world that share similar rituals with burning sage. I have read a great deal of articles with information on the history of sage and its rituals, but for the purposes of this blog I am going to focus on the practice of smudging, its benefits and how you can incorporate it into your daily life.
Smudging is something I have really enjoyed doing. I feel it has helped me clear my head and rid my space of any negative energy that I am feeling and not wanting. It has helped me stay relaxed, stress free and focused on days that I am feeling overwhelmed with the day-to-day stresses that come along with being a mother, wife, business woman etc. Smudging has many benefits and can help your overall well-being. There is technically no scientific evidence to validate these claims, but studies have found that it can be purifying. It may also release negative particles and help neutralize positive particles and has also been known to repel insects – those Texas mosquitoes in this summer heat can be brutal! You can smudge objects as well, if you are concerned about a negative history or back story to attached to them. This can bring you peace of mind and allow for the item become more sacred to you.
I personally use sage (specifically, white sage) because it has been said that it can keep bacteria and viruses away. This is huge for me! My four-year-old son has asthma and I will sage his room once a week to help eliminate potential flare ups with his asthma. Side note: I make sure he is out of the house when I am smudging because the smoke during the process can aggravate his asthma. I usually do it while he is at school so when he gets home the smoke is gone. I am not a doctor by any means, but if you are going to smudge and you have a relative that has either asthma, allergies, bronchitis or any other upper respiratory conditions I highly recommend you have them wait to enter the room until after the smoke clears out.
Another reason I smudge is to clear negative energy from either myself, my house or any other physical space of mine. Examples of what I mean by negative energy is any past traumas, bad experiences or even negative energy you feel from others that you have either had at your home or have been around you. Smudging has really helped me establish a positive, peaceful environment for meditation and relaxation. Yes, I meditate. I am a firm believer that meditation helps my overall energy. I like to sit down and let go of any negative thoughts with a sage burning ritual. There are times that the stress of life get me to a breaking point. This ritual helps me collect my thoughts and get back in self-control of my mind, body and soul. I am not saying that it will work for everyone, but it does for me. I start by letting go of any negative thoughts I am having, and get myself into a state of relaxation by focusing on my breathing. Meditating and smudging helps me focus on my intention and dedication towards self-improvement. Afterwards, I feel at peace and a whole lot lighter, emotionally.
I truly believe meditation can change your brain and help reduce your overall stress levels. I incorporate both smudging and meditating into my daily life because I have found it helps me feel more relaxed and have a more focused brain space. It may be something a little out of the ordinary for you, but I really suggest you try it! I could go on and on about sage and how much I love it, but I also understand that it is not for everyone. However, if you are looking to try something different to relieve stress, reduce your anxiety, get rid of negative energy, help you heal and just bring an overall calmness to your day to day then sage aka smudging might be for you.
The type of sage I tend to use most often is white sage, but I also like to burn Palo Santo, I think the aroma smells amazing! Surprisingly, I purchase both my sage and my Palo Santo on amazon! If you don’t particularly enjoy the sage smell or the Palo Santo scent you can also try adding relaxing oils such as lavender, thyme, rosemary to help. It can also help add a little variety to the aromas and your ritual. If any of this sounds intriguing or interesting to you, I’d say go for it! It certainly doesn’t hurt to try something new, and you could discover that it is beneficial for you too.
Below I will list a few items you will need to get started.
- Sage – represents the earth and the smoke from it represents the air element.
- Abalone shell – this is used to hold the sage while it burns. The shell is said to represent the water element. You do not need to purchase this item if you do not want to, you may use something similar to place the sage on as well. The shell and feather are just the more traditional way.
- Matches or lighter – this is obviously used to light the sage, and represents the fire element.
- Feather – this is used to fan the smoke upwards. It is said that using the feather breaks up blocked and stagnant energy, and also represent the air element. You certainly do not need to purchase the feather, as using your hand to wave the smoke also works.
- If you are interested in an easy and convenient option, you can purchase a smudge kit. They come with everything you’ll need and are relatively inexpensive. As I mentioned earlier, I usually buy my kits on amazon.
The last thing I will add is whether you are interested in smudging for health reasons or spiritual reasons, this ritual can be calming and relaxing. If decide to try this ritual try to remember a few things:
- Nothing is random. Everything is related to everything.
- Caring and appreciating creation is everyone’s responsibility.
- This not religion. This is love.
